From Algorithms to Academics: Using Generative AI to Enhance Student Learning Across the Curriculum FILLING
Tuesday February 18, 2025 10:00am - 11:45am CST
This session is for Gen-Ed faculty teaching seated courses who want to help students use gen-AI tools ethically and effectively but are unsure where to begin. The session includes an overview of the AI-Education relationship and what is at stake in this rapidly advancing technology. The session will include student examples of AI tools for academic use, and attendees will discuss assumptions about AI and learning and participate in an activity to develop practical strategies for integrating AI as a learning tool into their courses. **EDITED** Please note that this session description has been edited since its original submission in August 2024. As with every semester since November 2022, fall 2024 proved to be yet another example of how AI is advancing faster than expected and how higher education is scrambling to keep up and stay relevant. Even student views about AI have changed since August 2024. Due to planning logistics and anonymity concerns, this session has been revised to include student survey data and classroom examples instead of live Q&A and an increased focus on declining reading and thinking skills and a discussion about what we have left in higher education.

Brain Changes Over the Lifespan: Supporting Students of All Ages
Tuesday February 18, 2025 1:15pm - 2:00pm CST
Normal brain changes throughout the lifespan can alter how we learn. One type of intelligence increases while the other decreases. This can begin as early as 30 years of age. Our non-traditional students often believe they are less competent because many times they do not learn in the same way as their younger classmates. Understanding these brain changes can help us support students of all ages by empowering them to recognize and use their strengths in their academic careers.
